My son is almost 8, and has found his dad's S.I. swimsuit issue. I am the first to have a boy in my close family. Is this the age for this and how do I handle it???? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Yeah I wouldn't allow it. Those magazines are meant for men, not boys.

I'm sorry but this would just not be appropriate for MY 8 year old. I get what you're saying Shawnn however I guess I just have a different opinion. Sure you can see a woman in a bikini on a warm summer's day, see naked people in a national geographic but those are quite different compared to what SI swimsuit edition is trying to portray. That magazine is far too sexually suggestive for an 8 year old. Also if it was the cool car that peeked his interested I'd go get him a Road & Track magazine.

Ok, I have to ask this. Yes, the SI swimsuit issue is revealing, but they do have swimsuits on! So why is that a big issue?

boys are boys. They are interested in different things at different ages. Did you ask your son what interested him? It probably was NOT the scantily clad women in the magazine, but perhaps the "cool car" in the background, or the beach/ocean, or something else. Don't freak out about something that is normal curiosity. Or, does your son not pick up other magazines, so perhaps that's why this is disturbing you?

I guess I don't get it. I've raised 2 boys, had brothers, male cousins, friends, etc, and I really do not see the big deal if an 8 year old sees a swimsuit issue. Heck, around here, you see more on your average summer day than they show in that particular issue. And, if it's nudity you're concerned about, well, Nat Geo has more nudity, and there were PLENTY of times that the ones featuring tribes from other nations went missing when I was young...

I would not allow my 8 year old to look at it but every family is different. If you're against it you could always make sure those types of magazines are inaccessible.
