We've been trying to get our 9 month old started on some finger foods but he gags with everything we give him, also gags with stage 3 baby food. Is there something I can do or is it something our baby will get used to/grow out of?

Try not to pay too much attention to the suggested milestones for what your baby should be eating and when. Try the next step food, but then back off for a week or so if your baby can't manage it, then try again.

My daughter didn't eat stage 3 baby food until 12 months old, but now at age 2 has caught up almost completely. She still struggles a little bit with chewing pieces of meat, but most of the time she does fine. We took her to a speech and language therapist (as they assess swallowing reflex also) and she had no problems. She just didn't want to transition except in her own time.

If you are truly concerned and the gagging seems less like a reaction to an unwanted type of food and more like trouble dealing with it, you can always ask your doctor to refer him for a swallowing assessment.

Both my boys gagged as they got use to different foods. It is because of the different textures they were not use to.

Gagging is natural, just stay at stage 2 foods until he is a little older. My daughter stopped eating all baby foods when she was 7 months old, so I don't really know a lot about it, but I have read just to stay at the consistency they are comfortable with and don't gag at.

i'm not real sure how to help you on this one, the only thing i could suggest would be ask your child's doctor and see what he/she suggests. I was going to suggest putting in a blender to get the lumps out but then i read the post and realized that wouldn't work for what you are trying to do. Good luck I hope you are able to get your baby through this.
