9 month old whines BEFORE he poops

My 9 month old has normal looking poops - different color and consistency everytime as on formula and most table foods. And he always whines and fusses before he poops for a few months anyway - and I usually know the difference between the "I gotta poop" whine and whining for being tired or hungry or in pain. I am just wondering if anyone knows if it is normal for them to whine BEFORE they poop as he doesnt while he is doin it - when I know he has too I used to put him in his exersaucer (he is too big for that now) or just sit him on the floor to watch tv and then he goes (sometimes he seems to push or grunt a little and sometimes not). He goes once a day usually (sometimes twice) so very normal bowel movements - so does anyone know why he would whine beforehand?

Probably gas or intestinal cramps. If he's going okay and not constipated I wouldn't worry about it.

thanks yeah that would make sense cause I feed him almost everything that I eat although he is only 9 months old - so if really starts to bother him will try changing diet some - thanks

Kate's right, he probably has gas or a bit of cramping. As long as he is going without any problems, then I wouldn't worry too much.

If you are still concerned about the gas or cramping, you can consult with your family doctor or pediatrician. Gas and cramping might be related to some of the foods he's eating. Common culprits are dairy, wheat/gluten, and soy. Talk to your doctor about dietary changes if you suspect a food might be causing the gas and cramping. Hope this helps and good luck!
