My son is 9 years old, he started school at 5 like a lot of children and over the period of 3 years in public schools he could barely write his name and could not read a book. The school evaluated him and only found that he needed reading tutoring 2 times a week for an hour, so thats what they did. They later asked me to have him evaluated for autism, I was glad to have him evaluated because I was terribly worried about the fact that he was not really progressing at all. He was evaluated by 5 different professionals including one at his school, and the only outcome was a wide range of ADHD meds the first 3 of which gave him horrible side effects. We finally got a medicine called focalin and it had some (i mean some) beneficial effects. The effects were okay but lasted for a short time, the doctor wanted to increase the dosage and I was already uncomfortable with him having to take medicine. After he was on meds for about a month he still continued to have some issues at school ( behavior , learning) , I had a relative go to eat with his children at the school and every time he would go into the school over a 2 day period of time my son was in a chair in the office and was told not to speak to his uncle. I then went to the school after finding out about this and then was informed that they had been keeping him in - "in school suspension" (iss) basically solitary confinement off and on for almost 2 weeks and did not bother to inform me. My son did not tell me because he thought that it was normal to be there because , as i later found out, they had been putting him there on a regular basis for a very long time when he refused to read or they didnt want to deal with him. I took him off of his medicine because he began to act like a zombie and the school called Child Protective services on me for medical neglect.( Even after I took him to multiple doctors and specialist) I took him out of school and began to home school him. From the start he has shown me a range of issues, he cant remember words that he knew the day before , he cannot read and has a hard time associating sound with letters, he will sit and stare at a page for 30 minutes to an hour if I allowed it. He cannot process math counting numbers and cannot remember numbers past 12 most of the time. If he reads a word he cannot remember the word when it comes up again 1 page later. He is NOT learning much of anything and I have no idea what to do. I have tried abc mouse hooked on phonics and I really am worried about his future and well being, as it is taking a toll on him. He is old enough now to realize that he doesnt know as much as he should and he is frequently discouraged and saddened by the fact that his friends in our neighborhood dont have these issues. I dont know what to do and am really looking for resources for help. I am a student myself and do not have a lot of income. I want my son to read write and do math his future depends on it. Please help- thanks carla
