If your are going to go the icky tasting route, fresh lime juice works and is much cheaper. Somehow I just don't feel like that is fair. This special thing I do that makes me feel better and relaxed has turned on me and tastes awful. It doesn't teach your child a new way to soothe himself, it forces him to stop.

Gently pull his thumb out of his mouth and remind him during the day. You can make a code word for when you are out and about, so he is not embarrassed. He likely doesn't even realize he does it, so if you say "Superman" it will remind him to take his thumb out of his mouth. He will do it at night without it being deliberate, it make him feel better and soothes him. My kids were pacifier kids. I just "lost" them at 3 or so. both my niece and nephew (now teens) were thumb suckers and both quit before kindergarten, without much fuss.
