ABA is often misused as many therapists in this field are not being properly trained. Alienating a child with autism by grabbing away the items he enjoys will increase his distrust and encourage him to retreat into his own world. Therefore, I often find it useful to train parents because they will then be able to train the therapists that come into their homes. I also encourage parents to sit it on sessions provided in the classroom and elsewhere, each time a new therapist is hired, to make sure their children are not being mistreated. Keeping the child engaged with interesting things while teaching new skills is the key.
