I have never had an abnormal pap in my life! I just got a call from my OB saying that my 6-week postpartum pap was slightly abnormal! They said it was negative for HPV, and want to re-check in 6 months. She said it may be due to the fact I was just getting over my first period. Is this common?

I also had an abnormal pap at my six weeks checkup, I ended up having a biopsy and having precancerous cells on my cervix, which they removed promptly, it took all of about 20 mins at the most. Im not trying to scare you, but you can never be too careful with your body afterall you do have a new baby. But like the other moms have said it is common to have an abnormal pap after giving birth. Just wanted to share

my ob doctor didnt do a pap at my 6week check so when i had my family doctor do mine 6months after my daughter was born it came back abnormal they sent me in to a different ob then who delivered my daughter and did a test and biopsy told me i had cancer and wanted to go in and remove everything before the test results had even came back. they came back none cancer so no i have to get a pap every 3months with my family doctor til they come back normal and every 4months have the test and biospy done. my family doctor told me its sometimes normal after having a baby to come back abnormal and not to stress over it so i wouldnt worry to much just yet

This really helped alot! It could be a number of non-harmful things. I have birth, bled, had my first period, had sex & then had my 6 week visit. My pap came back abnormal and I am waiting to go in and get another one done. These little insights relived alot of worry I had, I'am a new mommy & hearing the nurse tell me that over the phone is heart stopping because I've never had any health issues. Thanks for all the comments ladies, even though this is not my post(:

The fact she said it may be due to just getting over your first period means that it is likely due to having levels of blood or other such matter in the sample they took. This is just a safe measure to re test as blood and other such matter in this area can be cause of concern in testing. It is common to have an abnormal result due to the menstrual cycle, which is why the test came back neg for HPV yet is still "abnormal"

Yes this is very common,my first pap after i had my son was the exact same, sometimes what happens, is especially if your having sex,the sperm can cause an abnormal reaction in your muffin lol, sorry my little nephew is right here, and it can cause your pap to be abnormal, if there was anything extremly wrong the doc would have told you, and the second pap smear in 6 weeks it to see if it comes back normal, if it does then you will go for another like 6 weeks or something like that after to make sure it is still normal, so really it could be anything, but alot of irrregular paps come from having sex. cause agian the seman and the vaginal juices mix together and it can cause an abnormal pap. so No WORRIES lol

i have also had HPV for 7+ years. its popped back a couple times, i've had 2 colposcopys that came back fine. my pap was abnormal after having my son. i just had my one year visit since then and i'm in the clear, i wouldn't worry about it. one thing they did suggest to me years ago was taking more folic acid, and make sure you are still taking your daily vitamins. I kept getting sick after having my son, they said it was because i stopped taking my prenatals, but it is good to continue taking them for your body's sake.

Colposcopy... that's the name. Derr... brain fart. It's not painful, just about as uncomfortable as a pap smear. (or so I have been told by other women who have had it done.)

I wouldn't stress yourself out about it too much right now.

I had an abnormal one before my daughter was born, and an abnormal one at my six week check-up. I get another one done in March and my doctor said that if that one comes back abnormal then I would need to go in for another procedure.. I can't quite recall the exact name, but basically they are just going a little further with the testing.

It used to be that you would go for the procedure after two abnormal results, but now my doctor has advised me that it has been changed to three. But he did suggest to me that I get tested every six months for the next 2-3 years instead of once a year, even if the next one does come back normal, just to be certain.

Wish you all the best with this! :)

Very common the body is still healing from baby being born. I'd wait and have them check again in 6 months if you arent willing to wait that long then see iff they would do it sooner

I had the same results once. My doc said sometimes it is simply from some irritation in there for what ever reason. The tests are supposed to be much more sensitive now than they used to be. Chances are your next pap will be normal.
