Hi, my 6 year old son has recently been diagnosed with adhd. I really don't want to medicate but his hyperactivity takes its toll on the whole family and must be very frustrating for him as well. The school is hounding me to put him on medication. So I am looking for some help as to whether anyone has tried alternative methods to help calm their child.

Then I guess you need to decide if the benefits of medication outweigh the negative aspects. I am a school nurse and I see both sides, some kids clearly benefit from meds while others are just medicated for the sake of quieting them down. It is a tough option.

He sees a school councillor. And I have all my children on a no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives diet as well as eliminating all dairy and soy, he has not had his follow up appointment with his peadiatrician and hasn't recommended any therapist

Have you eliminated artificial coloring and preservatives from his diet? Red dye #40 is a common trigger for behavior is some kids at the school where I work. Does he have an IEP at school? Does he see a behavioral therapist to help him manage his frustration and energy?
