I need help from other Moms with ADHD Teens that have started using drugs. My son is 15, has been smoking pot for a year. I feel like he has essentially been grounded for the last year. He rarely gets out, doesn't have a phone or computer access, I never give him any money. He still manages to get in a lot of trouble. I need a few Moms that I can talk to who have been or are in the same situation.

I agree with you that ADHD cannot be treated with pot. The research shows that pot use in teens (up to age 25) causes permanent brain changes including an IQ drop of at least 8 points. While only 5% of adults who smoke pot for the first time get addicted, that number changes to 60% for a 13 year old. The research shows that ADHD kids have a higher risk of developing a substance abuse problem. What I really want right now is some other parents who have been in the same situation that I can compare notes, share ideas, and just have someone that I feel safe talking to.

Not directly, but I have students that use and have ADHD. There is some discussion among the parents that the students can handle the ADHD better when they use pot. As a school nurse I cannot permit underage kids to use pot, I do not believe that ADHD can be treated with pot. Illinois permits medical marijuana use but not for this diagnosis and certainly not in teens.

Hi Sarah E., thanks for your response - but you didn't say if you are a parent that is or has been in the same position. Are you?

If he has no money, phone or computer then where is he getting the pot? If it is at school, then you need to get on the principal to crack down.
