I agree with Michelle. Start by contacting an agency.

A lot of children's services agencies run info sessions on a regular basis for interested families. You don't need to foster now, but you can start learning about the process so you can figure out if this is something you can do and when you might be ready.

There is training and support for foster families, and they will be able to offer you some guidance in terms of how to proceed. I've heard for example that they often suggest you not foster children the same age as your own. With a baby or toddler they might suggest you foster school aged children or teenagers. You might not necessarily need to foster full time either, you could agree to do short term respite placements for example.

Start by gathering information though.

Contact a foster agency as meet with them. Discuss your concerns and maybe even ask to speak to other foster carers.
You also need to keep in mind that you have a 6 month old yourself and would you be able to give a foster child the attention they need/deserve without taking away from your own child.
