I was wondering if anyone knew anything about child law?.

My ex husband has moved but will not tell me his new address, the reason for me wanting to know it is because my 16 yr old son lives with him, I was wondering if he by law has to tell me due to my son being under 18 yrs old, we both have parental right.

Sky--you should have gotten this taken care of long ago. Divorce should have had something done about the custody at the same time or shortly after. Just because it was good for so long did not make it mean that this would never happen. Custody issues with court orders assigned to them protect everyone and you could have had that insurance to keep your rights from being tampered with.

Actually, with no court orders, he can do anything he wants, which is why it is imperative to get things sorted out legally.

I don't know what's going on in his head anymore, as far as I know he's not seeing anyone not that I care if he is, I think it's just he's trying to hide from his debts like normal that's why he will not tell anyone apart from his side of the family.

If all was well, then what happened to cause your ex to try to hide? It is very strange! IMO it is important for both parents to know where their child lives! What if there was an emergency? Is your ex living with a new partner or something he'd want to keep from you?

Thank you all, I have never needed a court order as things have always been good between us though our marriage break down and divorce, we have always spent the day as a family on birthdays and Christmas, this is totally out of the blue him doing this.

I have to agree with the others. YOU should have had this sorted in court years ago.

Without a court order your ex is basically free to do whatever he pleases. Is it morally right that you don't know where they live? Of course not and it is incredibly petty and immature of your ex to threaten his son w/ getting in trouble for telling his mother where he lives, but I'm not sure there is legally much you can do at this point considering your son is 16 (so custody/visitations are pretty much up to him at this point... especially since you never pursued anything legally prior to now). By all means consult a lawyer in your area for more specific advice though.

If there is no court order that outlines the custody, support and living arrangements, then I don't suppose you really have a right to know his address under the law. It seems completely bizarre that your ex would not tell you where he lives. What on earth could have motivated him to hide from you?

There is no court order between us because we have always gotten on, my son has been told by him not to pass it on to me or he will be in trouble.

There should have been something in your court order specifying that if either of you move you will provide the other w/ the new address and any contact info. Won't the 16 year old give you the address?
