I have an 8 year old who is dyslexic and also ADD. He is not on medication. Are there other options? His school has no learning support and they also suggest that he should repeat Grade 2. At the moment I don't know how to teach him. Can I have some advice?

I'm amazed that his school has no learning support. How can that be? Are you in the states? Does he have an evaluation that identifies him as ADD and dyslexic? If so, he should be entitled to some additional help. I realize funding in schools are pretty tight and resources can be short, but even so... if he's identified, he should qualify. And I still don't get that the school has nothing. What do they do for the other kids who need extra help? Surely your son isn't the only one.

Anyway, if you are left to do something on your own, I would seek out a teacher who is a certified reading specialist who has experience with the special education population who could work with him individually, like a tutor, and see if they can make progress with his learning. People who are dyslexic (and ADD) have unique learning needs, and I would want someone who knows what they are doing and can offer a variety of teaching strategies that might help him crack the code. Hope it works out.

Thank you for the reply. We are not in the States but we go to an American International School in Hong Kong. And dyslexia is very new to me and to the people around me especially my family. The psychologist wants him to go on medication which my family strongly disagree. I am trying other methods to help him. I will try your advice. Thank you very much. Appreciate it.
