Advise on how to prepare ourselves for sons Open Heart Surgery

Amy - posted on 05/11/2011 ( 2 moms have responded )

Our son was diagnosed with ASD at one month old. He's due to have surgery in about 6 weeks-right after he turns 9 months old. We're scared to death! I know once he has it he'll go on to live a healthy & active life. I was just wonder if any one can give me some advise on what to expect before, during, and after the surgery. How long will the surgery take, how long will we be in the hospital, recovery time, etc... Thank you so much!

Sorry, I can't answer your question, I just wanted to let you know that I will be praying for your little one and family.

Thank you Louis, We are going to be speaking with the surgeon before the surgery. We have a support team of family & friends. All of who will be taking turns coming to the house and taking care of our 3 year old. But I was just looking for others who have actually been through the process and what their experience was like.

You really need an appointment to speak to either the surgeon or a ward nurse who will be able to answer all your questions specifically to your son.

You need to build a support network around you as you are going to be spending a lot of time at the hospital in the first few days and will need someone at home to keep things moving. If you have other children then they need to be cared for full time by a family member and if you have pets they need caring for too. Expect to feel emotionally and physically drained as this is very traumatic and nothing anybody can say will make you feel any easier when the time comes to anesnatise your son. Try and hold onto positive thoughts throughout the operation and keep telling yourself you are doing this to give him a better quality of life. It will be the longest wait of your life until you get to see your little one again. Take every day as it comes.

Ask for a consultation today to put your mind at ease

I hope all goes well and your son is up and about quickly so you can put this all behind you and get on with raising your beautiful son.
