age 2 how well should your child know the their ABC

MOST HELPFUL POSTS

Totally depends on the kid. By 2, my girls could sing the song, recognize all the capital letters and a lot of the lower case ones, and I forget what else. At 2 my son could kind of sing the song. At 3.5 now he can finally recognize MOST of the letters (his sisters started reading when they were this age).

I don't think it's a case of 'should'. If a child is exposed to books they will pick it up. I don't believe in any sort of structured learning for a child this young. Some are into it, some aren't. It's important to give them the opportunity to learn through play, but don't force it.

In saying that, my 2.5yo knows all of her letters and numbers and has just started writing her name.

Oh, I wasn't worried. Just amused. It's just soooo Freja to do things in some weird order.

Heather, KNOWING the letters is a million times more important than being able to sing a song, so I'd say your daughter is doing just fine. ♥

There's a huge variance with the alphabet. My 27 month old knows most of her letters by sight now but she can't sing them in order or anything. This is apparently opposite to the other poster's kids. Ha. But I'd say there isn't an actual expectation at this age. Some kids will be into it and others won't.

My youngest could sing the song but couldn't recognize any letters for the most part till he was 4. He just had no interest.

At 2 my son knew the alphabet song but didn't fully understand what the letters were for. My 20 month old can also sing most of the song but that's all it is to her..a song.

They may have an awareness of letters but they don't need to know how to recite the alphabet
