Age to play at the park alone

I live in a small town and the gated community center with playground is right next to the police station. I want to start working out at the gym inside while my kids (6 and 8) playplay outside. I was a police officer so they are very aware of what to do with strangers and how to react to different situations. Are they old enough for me to do this? The town is small enough that everyone knows who the kids and I are. The only exit is far enough away that it would be noticed if they were leaving with someone other than me. If they are still too young what age is appropriate?

I would say they are too young to be unsupervised. If something were to happen (one of the children hurting themselves, you probably won't be covered. Even in restaurants around here with children's playground, they have signs advising supervision required for all children under 12, simply for insurance and risk purposes. You might get away with it if the children were 10, but 6 and 8 are too young.
