Why do a surprise birthday for a 1yo? It's not like they are going to understand the "surprise".

Oh my! 2 hours??
The kids will be fine in the backyard. Get them some toys for outdoors and they will be entertaining themselves. Just wait for the sugary stuff as they go wild. Give them salty food!
As to the grown-ups, go to a caterer and get some take out food.
Happy Birthday:)

Hi Alexandria,
Happy birthday to come for your son:)
For Olivia's first Christmas and Birthday I was so excited and planned and decorated like mad thinking that she would enjoy it. Wrong! I am sure she was happy to try some cake and see all the faces she loves and the colors of the balloons, but beyond that its a party for us.
The Birthdays from ages one to three are more for the grown ups to remember and for the kids to see on all the photos we took when they are a little older.
What I suggest to do is invite some family and some friends, but not too many as it will confuse your son and he might be overwhelmed by all the people. Do some decorating of the house/room, but you don't need to do a theme (save those for an older age), maybe blow up some balloons, bake a fun cake or cupcakes, some finger food.
Take loads of pictures, make a video if you have a cam. Your son will LOVE to look at them when he's older.
You can always check on pinterest for decorating ideas.
I hope that helped.
