We were planning on naming our baby girl Alexis, but my boyfriend was talking to someone who named his daughter that and he says everyone calls his daughter Alex all the time. I really don`t like Alex and was just wondering if you knew someone with that name would you automatically shorten it because you think it`s cute. The other names we have picked are Audrey and Jayde.

I hate when people automatically think they can shorten a name!!! Like mine, people assume it's ok to call me Kathy, which I abhor.

they have tried to call him PP too! And my initials are TP it's kinda funny when you think about PeePee and Toilet Paper! But not something I want people calling him!!!!

For Alexis, my "automatic short form" would probably be Lexi. I had a friend in high school with that name and she went by Lexus, like the car. I like Audrey, its a nice classic name.

Personally, I think Alex is a really cute nickname for a girl. But if you really can't stand it, you might want to think of another name. You can control what she's called when she's little, but once she goes to school, that's another matter altogether. And she may WANT to be called Alex.

Audrey and Jayde are harder to nickname, although I've heard of them being shortened to "Aud" (pronounced like "odd") and "Jay". Once again, make sure that those nicknames don't drive you nuts, because they're a possibility.

No, I'm kinda in the same boat. my son's name is Patrick and people try to call him Pat or PatPat because our last name is Patterson ( I know, I set him up for it by naming him Patrick Patterson. i don't really like it but its a family name on my husbands side) Anyhow, me personally, I don't shorten anyone's name unless they tell me they go by a different name. I've worked in chidlcare for years and i know a lot of parents that get irritated if you shorten their child's name. i know plenty of Madisons and Madelines who's parents get irritated if you call them Maddie. I say. Name your child what you want and if anyone tries to call her anything different just correct them. I always tell people "His name is not Pat. It's Patrick. If I had wanted him to be called Pat, I would have named him that."
