My son will be 4 in November. He hardly eats and only weighs 31 pounds (he just got there in the last month or so). I have talked to his dr and she says he is on the small side but not unhealthy. How can I get him to eat better?

My daughter is 4 1/2 and only weighs about 6 lbs more than your son, so it sounds okay to me. If the Dr. thinks he is growing normally, I wouldn't worry too much. Just keep offering him lots of healthy variety in his diet. Kids are very good at self regulating. They eat when they are hungry and stop when they aren't. :)

Hi Jennifer,

It isn't unusual for some kids to be on the "light" side. My daughter was born at a healthy weight if 8lbs 2 oz and gained weight very slowly. At one she barely weighed 16 lbs. At 5 she was 35 lbs. Her doctor said as long as she met the milestones and was healthy that it was just her genetics. While she was growing up I had to make sure that whenever she was hungry that she had nutritious food as she ate like a bird. She finally started putting on some weight when she was 8-9 years old; she is now 16 and is around 100 lbs ( which is heavier than what her doctor thought she would be). I wouldn't worry unless your doctor is concerned. You will find that he will eventually gain weight in his own time, in the meantime just make sure what you can get into him the the healthiest food you can provide. All the best :)

My nephew was under 30 pounds when he turned 4. SKINNY little guy, but perfectly healthy. Just keep offering your son healthy foods at regular intervals and let him choose how much and what he eats. If he's a milk drinker... I'd make sure to have whole milk for him if you don't already. Avocados are a great healthy fat food. Etc....

My son was 31 pounds at 3 years old and 34 pounds at 4.... and everyone says how 'big' he is! ;)
