Any ideas on what to do when my son goes to 1st grade?

My son is now 6. We have a conference with his K teacher last October. She said he reads between 1st and 2nd grade level. She was going to move him to a 1st grade reading group. She never did. At the end of the school year she said she didn't because of his impulisive behavior. I was talking to his doctor about is in June and he said if she would have moved him he would have acted more mature around older kids. What do you think? Was she holding him back?

My daughter just finished the first grade and they had a wide variety of reading levels , she grouped them in levels, the other times had the better readers with the lower level readers to help each other, this helped the lower level read better and the better reader work on stamina and fluency so its not holding the higher reader behind sometimes the stam and fluency improves with a level lower then they can read. It was pretty much the same with my sons first and second grade years (different teachers) The way they did it them my son ended the year his second grade year at a 4.5 almost 5th grade level. so it does work

I would talk to his teacher at the first open house and see how she does things.

I think its great that your son is reading above his grade level. He might still have been impulsive, though, because he was a 5 year old boy. Boys, especially sometimes, take a while to mature. I would see how he does in 1st grade. I would continue to encourage him to read, and talk to his teacher this year. She may be willing to challenge him a little more so that he's not bored.
