Does anyone have a kid with a summer birthday where you find your child at a disadvantage, where they enter kindergarten just after their 5th birthday and half of their classmates are already turning 6, causing your kid to play a never ending game of catchup? We have felt the effect of the "greying of kindergarten" where the older kids have skills and experience that comes with age, our kid notices the difference, on more than one occasion he has stated he is not smart like his classmates he looks up to, I have to remind him they are almost 1 year older than him!! Do we let him continue to feel this way and destroy his confidence by being one of the youngest in his class? No, we choose to take the teachers advice - she has recommended he repeat kindergarten not because of academics but for emotional growth and confidence. We tell him to think of this year as pre-k and next year will be kindergarten, and he will be like the boys he looks up to who have also completed 2 years of kinder. The stress is gone from his face and he's standing a little taller knowing he will be one of the "older" kids and a leader in the class come fall. Talking to other parents I've found a large number choose to have their kids do 2 years of kindergarten to give them an advantage before they go off to 1st grade (the school only offers preschool and kindergarten) Now I ask, is this mostly a private school thing or do any of you find this going on in public school? *
