I was wondering if any one knows how many ear infections you need to have before getting tubes in your ears? My son is 15 months old and has had 7 in the past year he has one now and goes back tues to see if its gone cause hes been having them non stop. I am afraid he may need tubes was wondering if any one knew about that im gonna ask his doc tues but just wanted some advice. thanks.

My daughter had a period of six months in which she had about 7 ear infections. It was almost but not quite continuous and she was suffering.

Since having the tubes put in during April 2012, she has not had one ear infection and has been a much happier kid.

There IS a risk with insertion of ear tubes that the hole will not close over after tube removal (whether spontaneous or elective) but the risk to a child's hearing is greater, in my opinion, if they suffer with frequent, severe ear infections. Scar tissue can present quite an issue.

If you're at all concerned, get a referral to a pediatric ENT. If they recommend ear tubes, go for it.

I believe the doctor told me that it is 6 in a year, or one continuous one for several weeks/months. 2 of my boys had tubes put in and it helped so much. My oldest had one ear infection for about 3 months. My other son had 11 infections in 1 year. They were referred to an ENT who didn't hesitate to schedule them for tubes. Some doctors/ENTs want to try diet changes or other lifestyle changes before doing tubes, but I never had to deal with that.
