My son who is about to turn 10 was recently diagnosed with mild mental retardation. His iQ is 62 on his psychological evaluation however is adaptive skills are within normal range. My son has had problems from the very beginning. I was 8 months pregnant when he was born. I believe I was 36 weeks when he was born. His weight was good, it was 7.4. When he was 3-4 months he was hospitalized with failure to thrive. They found he had a severe zinc defciciency which was fine after putting him on supplementation. Other than that he had severe asthma as an infant and toddler, its gotten better over the years, but he still has it. He's always been delayed. He really didn't talk until he was about 4. Socially now hes fine, but his academic work shows he has a problem. I always thought he was dyslexic and my heart is breaking. I can't help but look back and wonder if I did something wrong. This diagnosis is really hard. I just don't understand how hes mentally retarded if his adaptive functioning skills are fine. From I've read the adaptive skills have to be significantly limited along with low IQ to be labeled as mentally MR. Anybody gone through this? What symptoms did your child have? Did you ever find a cause etc? Would love to hear other's stories. Thank you.
