My son is 5 years old and newly diagnosed autistic (7 months since education diagnoses/educational findings, 4 months since actual medical diagnosis). Although I was told by his neuro psychologist that functioning levels are not used any longer with ASD, his pediatrician says he's high functioning. We are having MAJOR behavioral issues with him: kicking, hitting, yelling, spitting towards staff at school and other children. We were told ABA Therapy was essentially a cure for trouble behavior so he's been attending that 4 times a week as well as ABA at school. No one seems to be able to figure him out yet. Token reward systems haven't helped, positive reinforcements don't work with him either. My husband and I have always felt he is hyper active and have tried to get the ADHD addressed but the doctors and specialists seem to focus too much on his ASD rather than his constant impulsivity/ inattentiveness. Even reading on the internet and reading books I don't get much information about the co occurrence of both. Our sons autism doesn't cause issues in his learning... his impulsivity and lack of focus are a HUGE factor in why he is not progressing and why he has behavioral problems. I guess I just wanted to reach out to other moms who may have a child or children going thru the same thing. We feel incredibly helpless right now with our sons lack of progress and also his moods. Any feedback anyone wants to give me would be great! Anyone who has stories for me would be great too, helps us to feel we are not alone in this journey of being parents of a child on the spectrum. Thanks!
