Involve them in things you know they are good at. Whether it is sports, debate team, art, chess club, choir, dance, band, school newspaper, whatever. It really has helped my children, ages 23, 21, 19, 17, 14 feel accepted and have self esteem when they can succeed at something with others who have a like interest.
To succeed helps anyone feel better abut themselves. Find areas where they can experience that.
Sometimes, it helps to get them involved in volunteer work too. Candy stripes at hospitals, reading at the local library, visiting with seniors at a senior citizen facility. Boys and girls club helping under privileged youth.
Every likes to feel needed/appreciated too.
