My son just turned 13 months the other day and will not walk by himself .....He can pull himself up and walk holding onto things , and he climbs on everything , He just shows no interest in walking by himself , we have seen him take at the most two steps by himself then he goes straight to crawling , which he was also a late crawler , he didnt crawl until right before he turned 10 months , should i be worried ????? Is there any other 13 month olds not walking ?? I have 6 kids total and never have any of them walked this late , my last child before him she is 2 and a half now and she walked at 9 months all by herself , and by the time she turned one she was talking alot , and she is potty trained , i guess iam just worried he is really delayed , Iam i too worried ??? He does say a few words like momma dadda , bottle , no , and mine , eat eat , and he is off the bottle now for about a month , he does really good with a sippy cup.

Hi, new here...

My son was 16 months before he crawled (and that was the army crawl) and 23 months before he walked. His muscles were a bit low tone but he got there in his own time. To ease your own mind, talk to the doctor but I am sure he will be walking in no time!!!

My son didn't walk until he was 15 months. He just preferred to hold on to things and cruise. Give him some more time and don't push him, he will walk when he is ready :)

[deleted account]

Normal. Not every child will start walking or talking early. My daughter was 14 months old before she walked unassisted. I think walking at 9 months is very early. The Canadian hearing society guidelines state that by the time your child reaches 12 months they should say at least 7 words. If you are really that concerned about his development have him checked out by your doctor, but in my opinion perfectly normal.

Hi, nothing to worry about, he'll walk when he's ready. I was also terrible worried when our little boy didn't walk at that age (he hardly ever crawled, went from scooting around on his bum to walking). And then one day, as he turned 18 months, he got up and walked by himself. He is now two, he runs faster than other kiddies who were walking before him. And he climbs and jumps and dances and chases the dog :-). Don't worry at all. Your little one is still well within the normal range for walking. We found that our little guy could walk by himself, but he needed to feel confident enough in himself before he was willing to do it. Good luck!

My first daughter started walking when she was 14 months old.

My second daughter didnt crawl till she was 18 months, didnt walk till she was 23 months. My daughter was too content to sit back and watch others play so it took her longer to get motivated to walk. There was nothing wrong with her as i said she just lacked motivation.

Honestly, as long as you have toys and are encouraging him.. he'll do it when he's ready.

My daughter, who is now 5, did not start walking until she was almost 2. She could sit up, but she couldn't even stand yet at 12 months. In any case, she's a perfectly happy five-year-old now running all over the place. The doctor said she has what is called low muscle tone, which simply means her muscles are more flexible, but it's totally normal.

Every child is on their own timeline for milestones. You may just have a cautious one. He may be reacting to all of the activity that goes on around him if you have 5 other children. He just may not feel that he has enough stability to chance being in another sibling's way if they are dashing around. Often the youngest do not need to talk or get around very much on their own when they have siblings who can predict their needs and fulfill them for them. When he feels the need to do more, he probably will.

My nephew was 15 months before he walked. He had "sort of a lazy eye" (sorry, do not know the medical verbiage) and my sister ended up taking him to the eye doctor from a referral from her pediatrician. Once he was fitted for glasses, he started walking almost immediately. Turned out, he couldn't see very well. My son walked at 11 months, but my daughter didn't walk until 13 months old. Every child is different, but if you are worried, I would make an appointment with your child's pediatrician.

my oldest daughter walked at 11 or 12 months, but she was crawling and had teeth at 4 and 6 months. my youngest daughter is 10 months, no teeth, not really good with sippy cups, no crawling, just sitting... but she can't even do that on her own, we have to sit her up.

the doctors say that she might skip crawling and go to walking.

I have 5 kids and my oldest didn't walk til he was 13 going on 14 mos! I currently watch a 13mo old and he don't walk without holding on to anything. He shows no interest in walking. All kids will walk when they are ready. Good Luck!

My daughter didn't start walking until they week before she was 13 mos. She was inspired by other kids her age walking. She was irritated that they could get to the bouncer at the park I wouldn't put her on the ground to crawl. So the very next day she got up without any person or object to hold onto and took her first steps. And when she fell on her bottom I didn't get scared I laughed so she laughed. And I didn't get over excited when she walked I laughed, because she likes to entertain. So it made it worth her time to get up and try again. Kids who usually walk earlier have other kids around and parents that are really good with not picking up their kids all the time. They will eventually get up because they have no one to help get them from place to place.

My older daughter did not walk til she was 18 months and then only when we bought her properly fitted shoes. She would take a couple of steps from the couch to me if I was sitting on the floor. She was small at birth and had very small feet so she did not feel confident until she got the right shoes. My other two walked before they were 12 months All children are different Don't worry.

It does very with every child; my granddaughter just started walking about 3 weeks ago and she is 18 months. So I would not be to worried just enjoy it because when your son does start to walk he will be into even more things.

My daughter who is 2 now didn't really start walking until she was 15 months. My son walked at 9 months old. All children develop differently but on average most babies don't start walking until they're between the ages of 13 to 15 months. However if you are worried don't be afraide to talk to your pediatrician.

My daughter is 3 now but she started walkind around 10 mnths. The doctor told us that was advanced considering she never really crawled. She did the butt scoot thing too. She went straight from pulling up to cruizing and walking. My husband constantly had her on her feet and pushing up though from as early a 3 months. like you mentioned, with other siblings, he probably just hasn't found his own indepedance yet. You could always get your other kids to help make a game out of it with him. If big brothers and sisters want me to do it than maybe I should try. Use the good kind of peer pressure. as positive reinforcement.

My youngest son just turned 16 months today and is not walking. He stands on his own some and has taken a few steps. I don't think he started crawling until 10 months. He doesn't talk much either. My older son was 13 months when he took his first steps and about 14 1/2 months when he was walking all of the time. I didn't take my first steps until 16 months because I had older brothers and a sister that would carry me around :)

If he is still not walking by his next check up I would ask his Dr. I would enjoy it for now, because you know what comes next! I know it's hard not to worry because I do too.

Lindsey, I am a parenting expert here in Canada, and can tell you 'yes" many times.. Your son is just choosing to be wary and maybe in no hurry to walk.... Now assuming your GP has seen this and has no worries, you should not either. You could try encouraging him with putting things just out of his reach, but I know children as old as 14 months and only just starting to take an interest..

No way should u be worried. He shows interest and can at least stand so that's ok. My son didn't start walking til about 15 mos old. Every child is different and learns differently. Some say boys are just "slower" to do things than girls as well.

Many years ago... my baby brother did not walk until 14 months. I was 9 at the time and tended to carry him about a lot. I was wondering since you have 6 children, if this is also the case. and being the youngest... there are a lot of people doing everything for this lil guy.

My mom finally had to tell me to stop picking him up... and sure enough... he started walking!

My daughter was the same way. She is now 14 1/2 months old and just took off 2 days ago. So he will do it when he is ready. You know he has the strength to do it, do just be patient. They are all diffrent quit worring.

[deleted account]

Whenever I talk with Moms that are worried, I ask them if they have the motor skills to walk. You said he can walk while holding on to things. So this just sounds like either he hasn't gained the confidence to walk yet (have you tried the push carts they use to learn with?) or he just doesn't care to walk yet. We raise our children to be independent, then get worried when they make their own decisions. As far as not talking, I will ask if he understands you. Some kids just don't want to talk. I had a very intelligent friend that didn't talk until he was 3. But as long as your son understands you (like you ask him to go get the ball, and he will get the ball) that means his hearing is okay, and brain development is okay.

Don't stress yet. I have two daughters, one walked at 11 months the other at 15 1/2 months. The one who didn't walk until she was 15 1/2 months also didn't talk until she was over two the other was speaking in sentences on her first birthday! They are both now beautiful dancers one does ballet one does Irish dance. It'll all work out. You'd have a gut instinct if there was a "problem" I mean after all you have 6 kids right?!?

My son, who is turning 27, on Friday did not walk until he was almost 14 months old. Don't worry he will walk one of these days. You may find he is just a person who want looks before he leaps. When he does choose to walk, he will do it well.

My son was 16 months before he started walking completely. The doc said there was no need to worry unless he was 18 months or older and still not walking. He is now 22 months and only says a handful of words. He has 2 older siblings who talk to him all the time. I read and sing to him but he still doesn't talk much. Every child is different and will do things when they are ready. Try not to worry.

I am the Mommy of seven kids ranging in age from 4 to 25 years old. All of the walked and talked at different times. My now 18 year old did not walk till he was 13 months old, and he did not talk till he was 3 and we than had him in speech therapy until he was 5. By the way he was latter identified as a gifted child not a child with delays. Talk to your pediatrician and let them reassure you that every child is different and develops at their own speed. With 5 brothers and sisters before your little one I am sure he doesn't feel the need to do anything yet as he has all of the other little ones that will get it before he even knows he needs it or will pick him up and carry him around. He'll soon realize it is more fun to do it himself as he gets older.

My daughter, Emilee, didn't walk until closer to 15 mths. and still was shaky.. Shes 25 mths old now but she didn't start talking until recently either, except for momma, dadda, baba. And really thats about as far as her vocabulary went until like 18-19 mths. But now she doesn't stop talking, and she is in the process of being potty trained and she is not delayed at all. She knows all her ABCs and can count to 15. That all happened in about 6 mths. But you asked about walking so I just wanted to let you know that my daughter was the same way. Climbing on everything but just no drive to walk or talk.

Good luck

Just goes to show you how vastly different each child is! My first walked a week after his first birthday; my second waited until he was almost 15 months. I do know that boys tend to do things a little bit later than girls. I have a 3 1/2 year old who is not potty trained, and he has absolutely no desire to be potty trained.

I wouldn't worry a bit if I were you. Now if he goes past 18 months, then I would probably mention it to his pediatrician. Good luck!

im sure there isnt anything too worry about...but if he reaches 15months & u are still worried then take him to the doc..just to cheack it out!!

hope this helps...

Hey... don't worry.. some babies are late bloomers.. my daughter was also one.. she was late in everything.. she started walking only by around 15 months.. one thing u can do is to encourage him to walk by himself.. first u hold his hand and get him to walk wenever possible.. then after a few days of tht give him space enough for him to take couple of steps by himself and give him the assurance tht ur there to hold him and will not allow him to fall.. u keep increasing the distance as he gains confidence and lo behold he'll get confident enough to walk by himself.. he is jus probably over cautious also.. this is wat i did with my daughter and once she got over her fear of falling she started taking more than a couple of steps and started walking soon..

[deleted account]

My son didn't sit up until just before he was a year old, he used to roll from one side of the room to the other, a few months after he sat up, he started to bottom shuffle around. He was so fast that he didn't bother to crawl and wasn't interested in walking for a long time. He finally walked when he was 21 months old, and when he did, he walked right across the room through the doorway and down the hall!

He will do it when he is ready :)

All 3 of mine walked at 14-15 months even though one was walking holding hands at a year and another cruising at 9 months. With 5 siblings he will develop the skills he feels he needs to compete. Enjoy this time and remember he is an individual and we all have things we're better at.

I have 3 boys the oldest (now 11) started walking at 24 months (started crawling at 18 months). The middle ( now 10) started walking at 15 months, and the baby (now 25 months) started walking at 18 months (crawled at 11 months). He still has the toddler wobble. The older 2 were early talkers, but the baby is not. I think that it is because they have large heads 90% +(oldest and youngest) , and small feet the 25 month old is wearing size 5 (infant) the 10 and 11year olds (size 3 boys) The oldest is still behind his peers in motor skills, but the middle ran cross country and did well. The doctors said that it was because others were doing things for them, I think that it is physics. There are a lot of things to look at.

My one and only daughter started CRAWLING and pulled herself up all on her first birthday. We didn't carry her around all the time, but she was a "Watcher" She would sit in the middle of a room FOREVER and just watch every move anyone made. I was totally stressed out, she would slither and roll everywhere and not CRAWL. Then, on the weekend of her Birthday, she pulled herself up, crawled, and I thought she was gonna take off running in a heartbeat.... but she didn't start walking until about 18 months old. And then, she didn't toddle. She stumbled twice and then was off as if she had been walking forever. We figure, as with many other things she has done, she won't do something unless she KNOWS she can do it. She doesn't like messing around with trial and error, she wasnts to succeed or she gets irritated. At 6, now, its still sort of the same thing lol.

Of course, like they say some babies thrive in other ways first... she did pop off with her first full SENTENCE at 10 months. Shocked the heck out of my husband and I when she scooted into the kitchen screaming at my husband and I told her "hunny we do not scream at daddy, its not ok!" and she looked at me, and clear as a bell said "But daddy have my juice!!!" My husband nearly dropped the cup and we both sat there dumbfounded, jaws open like a bunch of goofballs.

They thrive where they want to thrive first!

Hi Lindsay

I would have thought that if you have 6 kids (are you mad:-)) that you would know that each and every one of them are different. Our first girl crawled at 11 months and walked at 14. Our second girl (only 19 months now) has never crawled (she was a bum shuffler) and didn't walk until she was 16 months! She is now running a bit and trying to jump and looks quite normal to me. Don't worry they al do it in their own time. Ok, if they get to 18 months and are not wakling then take them to a specialist physio. Good luck and don't worry.

My daughter did not walk until 13 months. She has no issues with her motor skills now at age 3. There is a huge time span of kids learning to walk. In my personal acquaintance one little guy learned to walk at 6 months (his poor mother!) and another learned to walk at 18 months. I will say that I have noticed that height seems to have some bearing on this. Shorter kids seem to get a handle on it earlier than taller kids. Not a hard and fast rule by any means, but just something I've noticed.

My daughter was the same. She walked around 17 months. Our pediatrician preemptively reassured us that she was fine before I could even bring it up; up to 18 months is still considered normal. She was a late roller, sitter, and crawler. Thing is, we're pretty sure should could have walked much sooner; she just didn't feel like it, or didn't want to do it until she was sure of herself. When she did finally walk, it was good, solid walking; she didn't spend months wobbling everywhere. I would especially not worry if your son tends to do things this way: approach with caution, practice a whole lot, and then do it really well when he finally does do it.
