ASD toileting at 14

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

My son absolutely refuses to wipe himself at 14. He's practically a man now---I shouldn't be wiping his butt. I can't make him stay on the toilet until he does it himself because he will push me away (he's bigger than I am). I started with a Behavioral Spec (!?) and all he wants to do is hand me data sheets to fill. I need an intervention here---not a research project! What's with all this paperwork, questionaires etc???? Why can't someone just get to the point and come up with strategies? That's what I am paying them for!!!!! Help.

That's NOT what I said, Barbara.
FYI, I deal with disabilities on a DAILY basis. Since you made absolutely NO mention of handling issues his entire life, I took from your post what you put into it: that you had just contacted a behavioural therapist and didn't understand the necessity of the paperwork and forms.

Your assumption was also entirely incorrect, so here's to ya.

Best of luck.

I know you meant well but we've been addressing several issues since he was 2 years old. Psych reports? Dozens. Interventions, dozens. Med changes and med holidays---more than you can imagine. It's easy for people who do not understand to think "Bad mommy---why didn't you intervene earlier?" It's a wrong assumption. If you don't have any comments that help the situation, then it's best not to comment.
Thank you.

Toilet training and hygiene should have been approached long ago, even if your child has a disability.
If you are just now getting him to behavioural specialists, of course you have to fill out reams of paperwork and behavioural studies before they can come up with a strategy, so yes, you're paying them to do something, but they need YOU to provide the required input so that they can help you.
