My daughter just was tested for GBS. The Doctor made her perform her own test. The Doctor sent her to the rest room and had her swab herself. She told the Doctor she was not comfortable with the swab herself as she has never put anything in her rectum before. She asked the Doctor to do it and she was told she had to. Is this normal. I have read articles on this test and the articles all have stated the practioner does the swabbing.

Is her doctor able to deliver? Or is another doctor? i would tell her to complain now, so she is treated properly for the remainder of her pregnancy. Now I see why you are saying the nurse is lazy. I will concur. It clearly is a procedure she may not like, and decided to have her do it herself.

I can see why her doctor may not be able to do that procedure. infection, and chemo. Not a good mix.

I agree. Her OB developed cancer a short time ago and is not able to practise at this time. And it was the nurse and she told the OB who is a midwife what had happened and she was told that is the way the test is done. But some of us know to research and ask questions. That is why I went to this forum to find out the typical proceedure. After she has the baby she will be putting in complaints. But she is stuck due to her insurance and not much else she can do at this time.

This just may be how this specific ob or nurse does things. It doesn't mean she is lazy. If it is the nurse, then she can ask for a different one. I had that test done being preggo, and yes they did it for me. They also just used one swab. It took me a bit to remember, but yup. My midwife also did it for me. If she doesn't like that nurse, tell her to speak up and request another nurse. Chances are she won't be delivering with her though, so that is a plus. She can certainly make a complaint to the nurse manager on duty, and speak with her about what the typical procedure is.

Now wait....rereading everything, you are saying the nurse told her she had to do it....now you are saying her ob. Which one was it? If she is not comfortable with her ob, she better find another one asap.

It was her OBGYN. She is delivering a baby in two weeks.

I had not heard of this test and wondered if the normal proceedure was to have to perform your own test.

And yes she is capable to swab her own ass at her age. But I read in all the artices that the Doctors swab you. So I was curious if this is normal or does is this OBGYN lazy and needs to be complained about.

Next women will have to perform their own papsmears.

Well, she is 25 and can handle swabbing her own ass. The swab is going into a high bacteria area of the body, and is not going to be sterile regardless. She is a grown women. i don't understand what the big deal. She could have asked for a second swab. But the whole thread is about why the practitioner did not do it. usually just gynos will do this. Not general practitioners.

The problem is she is 25. second child. She told them she did not want to test herself. The nurse told her she had to. I am curious if this test is suppose to be administered by her or the practioner. I was not there. Her husband was and said he would but they sent her to the restroom and told her to do it. I also do not understand swabbing the vagina and inserting the same swab from the vagina into the rectum. I would think that two swabs should be used.UGH

Huh. i would have rathered the doctor let her do it or me do it. Why couldn't you do it for her? How old is she? Her age may be part of why he did not do it for her.
