At what age did you let your child start staying home alone for 4-6 hours?

I have checked on my State rules which are 12 or based on maturity level. Many states have 8 and 10 year old guidelines. My child is 9 and average to above average in maturity.

Go with the state rules as a "cover your butt thing". If anything were to happen the maturity of the child in your eyes won't mean squat.

Here in Alberta, they can be left at 9 (I believe) for a couple of hours, not over meal time. At 12 they can babysit for full days (3 meals) but not overnight.

Still, go with the state rules and there will be no problems, legally. If you have to go for 4 - 6 hours have him check in with a neighbor and he will not be considered to "be alone".

I'v only just started leaving my daughter alone for longer now she is nearly 13, she is sensible and trust worthy, I started when she was about 11 just leaving her for a short time. we have no age limit here in the Uk as it is such a grey area depending on the child but if a child is hurt the parent could be prosecuted with neglect.for me If I was leaving a 9 year old (and given your state rules) I would only be popping to the shop.
