I don't remember when my 16 yr old started walking, but I know he was 9 months when he lowered himself out of his crib, walked down the hallway, scooted down the basement stairs on his little butt and found me doing laundry in the basement -------- scared me to death! -- He was supposed to be down for his nap and allowing me "MY" time to catch up on housework! I always kept the dangerous steps blocked off (door knob cover, barrel bolt and gate!!) -- but had taken everything off since he was "safe" in his crib!! Evidently didn't get the door shut either (carrying laundry basket on my way down) because he was actually too short to manipulate the knob!! As some of the other moms said -- it was scary because he had no fear or understanding of danger so we had to be right with him all the time --- had to move him into a toddler bed because of his climbing over the rails!! My 7 yr old didn't walk until right around a year -- it was SSSOOOOOOO much better! My Sister-In-Law was so concerned because my nephew was so far behind his cousin in talking that she spoke to her ped ---- the doctor asked about his walking/climbing activities --- he was FAR ahead of his cousin in those areas -- the talking cousin could hardly sit in a chair without falling on his head -- whereas his cousin was climbing, balancing, walking, and running like a little monkey ---- Doc said it was very typical for kids to "concentrate' on one area or the other -- some do take a balanced approach, but many excell in one category to the detriment of the other. He told her not to worry about it -- they would eventually both get it all mastered and he was correct!

My oldest could hold onto things and walk at 7 months, but refused to walk on his own until he was almost 11 months, my daughter was 8 months and my youngest was just under a year. Her brother and sister would carry her everywhere, so she never had a chance to walk. lol

Both of my kids' walked at just under 10 months. It is on the young side. I used to run a playgroup, so I've been around more kids than I can count. I've seen kids' walk anywhere from 9 to 19 months! Congratulations on the mile-stone :-)

My girls both walked around 8 1/2 months and they crawled around 4 months old. However I used to keep babies that sometimes wouldn't be walking until past a year old. Because my girls are twins we couldn't hold them both all the time which meant early on they were used to be down on a blanket an encouraged to be autonomous. They walked when they were ready, yours will too!

I have 3 sons, the first walked just after he was 10 months , the second just before he was ten months and the third at 16 months! All are healthy and have no structural deformaties from walking at very young/old ages. The third is very double jointed and I think that his joints weren't strong enough for him to walk any earlier. I've know kids walking as young as 9 months. There's no set age so don't worry. My boys are all grown up now at 20,18 and 16 so I think and detrimental effects of their walking would have shown by now.

My daughter was 91/2 months when she started walking. It is early, but she's 5 now and doesn't appear to have any affects from being an ealry walker. Other than also being an early climber and getting a few bumps and bruises earlier. Every child is different. Unless your dr. is concerned i wouldn't worry about it too much.

Robin was tearing around our little market in a walker when she was 8 months old. By the time she was ten months, she was walking on her own. Then, one day when she was 18-months, she learned how to climb out of her crib alone AND how to open her seat belt. That was the last day I had a peaceful cup of coffee for quite a few years!

My daughter, born 2 mo. early, started walking maybe a week or so before turning 14 months.:) (By this I mean she was walking well. She had been taking steps for quite a while before that but I didn't consider only a few steps as 'walking'.)

12 mos my first son on his b-day I bought him the best shoes I could and he took off running in the shoe store. my other son was slower about 15 mos. It seems from what I hear boys are generally slower in development than girls.

I have two boys one started at 9mths and the other at 7mths, but they were both crawling at 4mths. Crawling is so importing on their development and if she has not crawled for long play crawling games. I have seen so many children who have not crawled or only crawled for a short time really struggle with other milestones later, like writting

My oldest was 9 months- and when I took him to Stride Rite for shoes, they put him in a size 6 1/2!!! I asked the salesman if it was normal, and he said for children 15-18 months, yes. I said, he's 9 months old. The salesman said "He has big feet!" He's 13 now and wears a size 11! My youngest started walking around 12 months. He wanted to keep up!! :) They will start when they are ready.
