At what age should my girls stop getting into the shower with me?

I have 4.5 and 2 year old girls. Many times when I get into the shower they want to join me. It's fine with me and an easy, quick way to get everyone clean at once. At what age will they be too old for that?

Thanks everyone for your comments! They have helped a bunch, except for Eleanor, whom I don't agree with. I don't want my girls to be ashamed of their bodies. My oldest has made some comments (some of which have made me crack up laughing) and asked questions about my body and her own. It has given me a good opportunity to teach her correct terminology and give her some valuable information. Don't get me wrong, I love showering by myself but it's just so easy to toss the both of them in with me and get it all done at once. I get to shower alone on the days I go to work. Thanks again everyone!

I agree with the general consensus that they will let you know. I think that you being comfortable with your body around them, and allowing them to be comfortable with their bodies around you is very healthy for them, and that if you just let it happen naturally, it will lead them to have a better body-image for themselves later.

Right now they do not see anything "wrong" with their bodies or yours, and they will carry that healthy attitude on with them. When you deny them that closeness (showering with momma is something brothers can't do) because you don't think they should see you naked anymore, it makes them think there is something 'forbidden, ugly, or dirty" about both your own body and theirs.

In time they will start to want their own privacy, my 11 yr old stopped bathing with me when she was five, but my youngest will still hop in the shower from time to time and she is six. *shrug*

I used to take a bath with my kiddo sometimes until one day he looked at me and said "Mommy, you have big boobs and a hairy tail". That was the end of that. I still sit on the edge of the tub with him and he comes in the bathroom when I am in the tub or shower but that was the breaking point for me. He is 3/1 and did this when he had just turned 3.

I have a 6 year old daughter who, from time to time, still has a shower with me. But she hasn't been asking me as much in the last 6 months or so. Every once in a while she wants to. It depends on you and your child I guess. When they are ready, they will let you know.

They will stop getting in there with you when they become uncomfortable with it or when they would prefer to do it on their own. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's not going to do them any harm to see you in the nude. Just go with your instincts.

hi use to do the same thing with my girls. i don't see it as a problem. when they get to a good age which is whatever you feel is a good age, just put them in together. i'm putting my baby girl in the bath with me now, it's makes my life so much easier.

My daughter is 5 and she always jumps in the shower with me. When she decides that she wants to take showers by herself then she can stop stealing all my hot water! lol

I have to say that I agree with the fact that they will let you know when it's time to stop. If you don't mind having them in there with you ( I prefer my showers alone only because it is the only time I get any piece and quiet LOL) But they should also know that it is okay to be comfortable with their bodies and yours, and the differences between them. When they start asking questions, I would answer them, honestly. I don't think children should be ashamed of being naked or think that you are either, may give them a bad self image of their bodies. But I also think that letting your older one know that she can take a shower by herself if she wants to is okay too. I know my six yearold loves to take a shower by herself, she feels like a big girl, and gets to do something without her little sister pestering her:)

In my opinion, they will decide when they no longer want to shower with you, or a time will come that some one will feel uncomfortable with the arrangements. For instance your older daughter may feel like she is too old to shower with her mommy and little sister any more. I showered with my son until he was about 4, it was at that time that he started noticing our differences and asking lots of questions I then no longer felt comfortable with the situation and he started bathing alone. Each situation is different and I believe as long as everyone is comfortable then go for it, it saves time and is a great opportunity to insure your kids are learning to properly bathe themselves.

Eleanor, they're girls. They're going to grow up and have exactly what their mother has now. I mean the oldest is only four and a half. Nudity is not that big a deal.

I would say the older of the two is already too old, but to be fair and not seem like you're favoring either, it may be time to stop that all together. Once they're old enough to remember things years down the road, which is said to be around age 3 or so, would be a good time. Perhaps an assisted shower for them together with the curtain partially closed so you can supervise and help do the washing is in order?

I think they will decide before you that they no longer want to share a shower!

Just my opinion, but I think at some point either you will start to get uncomfortable or your girls will. I think when they are too old for it, they will let you know (or just stop asking to get in)
