There is so much conflicting information out there regarding when to start your baby on solids....

At what age did you first give your baby food (farax or baby cereal and then mushy type real food etc).

I started my son on the baby rice cereal at 3months and 3 weeks. Gave this to him for a week and then started giving him some banana in the morning and some sweet potato mash at night. He is now 4 months 1 week.

I still breast feed so the food is more about him getting use to solids then as an actual food.

Hello mom's

I have started my baby boy of 4 months 12 days on his first pots of vegies, I have given him carrot purée, four times, he was fine with that, I gave him a little bit of Banana purée yesterday evening, and today I have started him on mashed pea's,

will give him 1 veg for 3-4 days to make sure is all okay with him, and no allergies,

Am I starting too early??

what are the risks if I have started too soon, ??

All advice appreciated, thank you in advance for a reply, :)

I started when she could hold her head up completly unassisted and was showing interest in my food when I ate. So at 4 months I started mine with rice cereal and just let her experiment with this texture in her mouth for a couple weeks once a day and then slowly started to make it thicker. By 5 months she was eating cereals and fruit. 6 months I started the veggies.

My son was hungry early so I fed him cereal around 3months. But I can't imagine feeding cereal at 1-2weeks. Their little tummies aren't ready for food. He was eating jar foods about 4months and loves his food and isn't picky. He stayed on formula though until he was a yr. About 10-11 months I started going half formula and half whole milk to get him used to the taste of regular milk. He is 3 now.

I have twin girls who were 7 weeks prem, special care team at hospital told me it didnt matter if they were on milk until 12 months old

Got to 4 months and they were just so hungary all the time got to about 4 and half 5 months, and i gave up the waking had started in the night again, they just werent getting enough food!!

Told my local health visitor and she actually suggested weaning them!!!

I do believe that your baby tries to tell you when he she is ready, my 2 kept looking at my food, or reaching out for it...This is a dead give away, hope this helps!! xx

As you'll find, it's really up to you, your son and your pedi. Babies with colic start cereal as soon as 1-2 weeks old. As long as you wait a few days between new foods to make sure there's no allergic reaction, he should be fine. (which I was a bad mom and didn't wait at all). He tolerates the food and is happy with solids then I say go for it. Especially with a pedi recomendation. I breastfed my daughter for 1 year, I started cereal around 3 months and I made a lot of baby food with a mini food processor so she had a great taste for table food when the time came. She eats everything now and has never been a picky eater and she's 9.

Good Luck

i started my son at 3 months on rice cereal but he didnt like it...he wouldnt really start taking it until he was on his fruits and veggies and i started him at 5 months on his veggies...then once his main veggies were done (carrots, green beans, wax beans, peas, peas and carrots mixed, sweet potato's) theni started him on his fruits....once i was able tomix his fruits with ihs cereal is when he ate it.....so i would say more so 5 months......

I think it varys from kid to kid. I heard the start at 6 mo but both my daughters were strong from the get go (held neck up and sits on their own at 4 - 5 mo). As well due to them wanting more than the breast milk I could give them we started with the Nurtilite Rice cereal and added banana, squash, apple sauce, carrots, then Oat cereal etc...

My second daughter is 5 months old now and started eatting the cereal last month and is already on to 2 veggies and 2 fruits.

I was told though to only give fruits and veggies till about 6 months, since the dr and I felt that she need food now.

Good Luck!

My baby is 4 mons old.  I've been told to hold back feeding solids until her neck is strong when in a sitting position.  before then, it's not safe

Hello Nikki,

watever  information u have its true, my  pedaec recommended to breast  milk my son till 6 months   after which he told me to start with cerelac/ farex of rice flavour as they are mild n easily digestible for babies stomach . he told me to  give small amt  for first week n later on gradually increase the amt.

He also recommended me to introduce one food at a time coz that will help us understand thatw hether  our baby likes it or not..

the solids are not recommended  during early stages of growth( ie before 6 months) coz they have very weak stomach n takes time to develop it..

later u can start with fruits, vegetable soup

 hope this helps u out

tc

bye

I started my son on rice cereal at 6 months, and then started introducing different fruits and veggies every week after that.

I spoke with the doc and she recommended i start him earlier on solids as he was always so hungry and i was producing as much milk as i could. She wanted me to start solids instead of using formula. His extreemly happy trying new foods so im pretty happy with it too. I was just asking as i have read to start at 4 months but still breast feed to six months (thats the current reccommendation in Australia) and have also read not at all until 6 months and have also seen six weeks!

Our Pediatrician suggested holding off on solids until 5 1/2 months. We started with strictly rice cereal for the first two weeks, then introduced the first vegetable at 6 months. Talk to your Ped and good luck!
