I have two kids. a daughter born with 2 healthy kidneys, and a son just born with only 1 kidney. This is a question for other moms with a baby born with 1 kidney that went on to have more babies. Did your next children have the same problem, only having 1 kidney?

My daughter is 6 and doing great. I just keep her out of certain sports at school and after. I also remind her teachers to make her drink water (she doesn't happen to do this enough) and make sure she eats healthy. She saw a urologist the first few years and has a renal sonogram once a year to make sure it is growing steadily. She was checked to be sure she didn't have a reflux problem (where urine goes up into the kidneys before coming out...that introduces bacteria and causes urinary tract infections. She was on prophylactic antibiotics as a baby and toddler but we stopped them since she never had an infection at around 2. She started getting allergic to them because of ear infections. (She also had a 2 mm hole in her heart that closed up, so maybe get an echo cardiogram done as a precaution.) I had 2 vessel cord while pregnant and we think there are urological issues genetically in my family. My second child, a son, and my third, a daughter, are perfectly healthy and had no issues. (tons of sonograms during pregnancy and after.)

Thanks for both your comments.

Mia, i get different answers from different drs. some say I have a high risk because ive had one baby with one kidney. and some doctors say no, i'm not at higher risk. it just scares me, ive also read where some people have babies with no kidneys, I cant imagine going through that. I just feel blessed that he has one healthy one, and as for what the dr's say thats all you need to sustain life, and live a normal life. which makes me happy to hear! Do they have to remove his cystic kidney? is that whats causing the infections??

Hi Marie, my baby is 6 momths old & he only has one functioning kidney. The one that doesn't work has multiple cysts on it & isn't functional & also on the same side his ureter doesn't connect to his bladder but his vas deferens. His functioning kidney is fine as it's been tested. The surgeon said that when the cells divide to make the kdneys his mustn't have divided properly. He has had one major infection & if he has another he will need it removed asap but we are holding out unitl he is around 12 months to have the kidney & ureter removed. He is the youngest of 3 boys. We do have some kidney things in the family with two ppl having duplfication but neither of their immediate children have kidney issues. What have your docs said? I think your son, like mine, may have just been a bit unlucky!
