Why do I always see in birthday announcement : we are naming our baby this but we are going to call it this other name (short form, nick name etc.) instead. Why don't they just call the baby that to begin with.

that has always been a niggle for me too! lol. I have family who name their kids this and that and then call them by their middle name...if you don't want to call them by their first name from birth, why give it to them! lol. if they decide when they are older they want to be called this or that, so be it! lol

Maybe they prefer the nickname, but when the child gets older he or she will be able to choose their full name or keep the nickname depending on what best suits them at each point in their life.

There are several reasons this could be.

Some names work very well when a person is a child, but as a professional adult you may not feel that being called Dr. Billy Jones or Attorney Bobby Smith are "serious" enough.

Family Tradition comes into play.  Many time people may name a child after someone who is still living, but in order to avoid confusion will call them by a middle name.  Or the child is named something that just, well, for example my husbands first name is actually Westbrook (per has Grandmother's request).  Need less to say the only time I use that name is in crowded places when I need to get his attention.

why short form a name just give the kid the short for to begin with if you are too lazy to say the whole thing. my daughters name is Andromeda when I registered her for school the secretary asked me what we call her. Andromeda i replied to which she said that will change when she starts school. 2 and a half years of school and she is still Andromeda.

I've wondered this myself. Why name your child John Thomas if you're going to call him Thomas? Why not call him Thomas Jack?

Lots of people like to have names with lots of ways to short form. Nick names are big part of characters. I think its a way to get out of chosing to have a multi sylible name.
