Hi, My sisters daughter is 3 months and 1 week old. She used to have sufficient milk, but from the past week she has completely stopped drinking milk. My sister feeds her a combination of expressed milk and formula feed. Today morning she rushed her to the hospital cause she her LO was completely denying all forms of milk. The doctor said that the baby is getting confused between breast milk and formula feed. So the mom should only feed her formula for two weeks. He has given her some medications to stop the breast milk for tow weeks. Kindly help with any suggestions. I am really worried.

If she is expressing enough milk then why is formula feeding? I would imagine that the doctor would perfer her to bf instead. I've always heard opposite, quit formula feeding? When i had my children my doctor was big on breast feeding and my son wouldn't latch on correctly and he made me go see a lactose councelor that was in the hospital. I went and we finally got him to latch on right and i ended up nursing for 9 months. If she stops breast feeding for 2 weeks then she will lose her milk. If I was her I would go against my doctors wishes and breast feed. Thats just me though.

Hi Serene, Thanks for your comments. I am surprised too. She is producing breast milk. She expresses in a bottle and gives both formula and express to the baby. I hope everything is all right with the baby and the mom. :(

Wow!!! I have never heard of this happening before. Why would the doctor suggest formula instead of breast milk? Was she not providing enough breast milk?
