Hi,
Our lad was born weighing 10.7lb. At 28 weeks he is 26lbs and we have the dr wanting us to go and see a paediatrician to get him checked out. He is chubby, so we are now worrying about all the things that could be wrong with him. He is breast fed and now having a few soft foods. Happy in himself so we were not concerned at all. However now being told that he is big in the face and off the charts is somewhat scary when the dr is implying it could be an illness. Personally I still feel he is just large but naturally so. Appreciate dr is being cautious, however with no symptoms is this actually a little excessive?

Thoughts welcomed pls...

Thanks,

-CL

Most likely, he is just a big boy, but it is ALWAYS better to be on the safe side. There is a very, very, very small chance that his large size and large face could indicate one of a few uncommon disorders, and in that case it is better find out as early as possible so that treatment can begin. Sometimes a delay in treatment of only a few months can make a world of difference, especially if the disorder is related to the developing brain.
Like I said, it is most likely nothing, but seeing the specialist is not a waste of time because then you can be sure and will not have to worry about some underlying cause for his size.

Thanks for the response. 98th percentile for height. So I think just a beautiful big lad.

Thanks,

There are several babies that are born around this weight. He seems a bit on the heavy side for a breastfed baby, but he could just be a tall one. My little guy looks like a two/three year old and he's only 10 months. Hang in there! The doctor is just being cautious. They rather bring it to your attention and keep an eye on it than to find out later on that it's a serious issue when it's too late. Best of luck, and I'll keep you and your family in mind.
