My son is 5 I brought him to the clinic because he had a fever of 102. The doctor looked in his ears and mouth. said he had a bad ear infection and sent us home with antibiotic and i was told to use Tylenol and ibuprofen. he started taking his antibiotic Tuesday morning. he takes it 2 times a day we are on day 3 and he is still hot. His fever was 99.6 which I hear isn't bad but shouldn't the antibiotic taken care of it by now? I also just found out he has teeth coming in on the bottom in the back maybe that is where the fever is coming from. I am really worried I should be bringing him to the hospital instead of waiting this out and continuing his meds for the 10 days. If anyone knows anything please I could use the advice.

Dove is correct. As a nurse and mother of four a fever of 104 is typical in a young child. Febrile seizures are also normal and do not warrant a trip to the ER. the high temp serves a purpose, to kill the bacteria. Treat it only if your child is 103 or greater, truly miserable, having seizures or cannot eat or sleep.

Brain damage actually doesn't start to happen til 106. IF the fever does not come down then lower is dangerous, but we've had more 103 fevers than I can count, a few 104s... and even two 105s. I don't even treat a fever (will treat other symptoms, but not the fever) under 103 unless it's at bedtime. ;)

I don't usually bring my boys in until I have given it time to run its course after he threw up and his fever was over 102 I decided to bring him in. I am going to take that advice and finish his antibiotics and see where he is at before I freak out. I would never let it get to 104 though. I have read at that temperature brain damage is a possibility.

But 99.6 is NOT a fever. It is slightly higher than normal, but it's not any type of a fever until it hits 100 and unless your child has a history of issues w/ fevers... a fever in and of itself is nothing to even begin to worry about until it hits 104+.

Do the antibiotic for the full course and if he's still not better go ahead and bring him back in if it will make you feel better. Honestly... I've never brought any of my kids in to the doctor for a fever... only w/ other symptoms. Many ear infections can actually clear up on their own w/in a few days.

Teething can sometimes cause a slight elevation in temperature... as can many random, minor bugs. If he is getting WORSE on the antibiotics it is cause for caution, but otherwise just continue the full course of antibiotics before you start finding something to worry about.

I know they say not to worry unless it reaches 101 it's just its been a couple of days and I thought the fevers would be gone. Now I see he has some teeth coming up too and that could do it too. I guess what I am really worried about is the antibiotic not working and that I won't catch it and he will get worse
