Bedtime for 12 year old?

My son has had a 9:00 bedtime for years, and last night requested a later one. I thought that was a reasonable request so I said sure, we can push it to 9:30. He became completely despondant. I looked it up and the legal curfew for his age is 10:00 but I just feel like extending it a full hour is too big of a jump. What time are your 12 year old's bedtime's?

My daughter just turned 13, and at 12 she had a new curfew of long as their attitude is fine (which not sure of that one once they reach this age anyway!) and school work isn't suffering...then the time should be just fine.

Wow! My son is almost 13, and most nights is still in bed by 9pm. Sometimes it drags out until 9:30pm. But then, he has to be up at 6:30am to get ready for school because his bus leaves at 7:30am, and I think 9 hours sleep for that age is really a minimum. If he didn't get that 9-9 1/2 hour sleep he would really struggle to get up in the mornings.

I guess my question to you is...are you having to drag him out of bed in the mornings? If the answer is yes, chances are he is not going to sleep early enough at night :) A teenager still needs around 9-10 hours sleep at night, and he is not really yet a teenager, so you need to judge this based on what time he has to be up in the mornings, whether he is functional with less sleep. Every kid is 5 year old functions well on only 10 hours sleep, so go figure.
