I wore a belly bandit after my last pregnancy and felt that it was really good. It basically just reminds you to hold herself up and have better posture. That will engage your muscles some, but not a lot. I also found that it was comfortable to be squeezed in after labour, and that I looked a lot better. The belly bandit doesn't replace exercise though.
You can start wearing the belly bandit right away, but you should wait a few weeks to start exercising your abs extraneously (longer if you have a c-section). The placenta leaves a large wound in your uterus and heavy exercise can cause it to reopen and to start bleeding again.
