I have a two year old that is bitting her nails really short, I have painted them with stop & grow every two days but that doesn't help, how can I stop her from bitting her nails, she even bites her toenails!

Unlike what many people think, nail-biters don't always bite because they are nervous, but often because they are bored. Most common time for kids to nail bite is when they are watching tv. Being a nail-biter myself, it is an extremely difficult habit to break, and my 4 1/2 year old was biting his till they would bleed! I would encourage keeping the nails trimmed and short. When Alex was biting his nails, I would come over and explain to him that if his nails were too long and bothering him, to come find me and I would clip them. This has helped and his nail biting has almost stopped. I also explained that germs lived under the nails and could make him sick. Unfortunately, it is just such a difficult habit to break, and the earlier you do, the better off and less dependent they will become.

I'm so glad mine isn't the only one! My daughter will be 2 next month and has been biting her nails for almost a year. Our ped's only advice was to distract her. Yeah, good luck with that! :) Once mine's a little older I'm hoping taking her for mommy/daughter manicures will help, but hopefully someone else will have some advice, because nothing's worked yet for Aubrey either. Good luck!

have you thought this might be a comfort thing for her? try and replace it with something, ie her fave toy or reward her for not biting her nails. we all have things that relax us and all have our strange yet wonderful ways perhaps this is hers. x
