Hi - we've been having a rough time with my 6 month-old's diapers. Around 4 months she suddenly got sick one day and went from normal breastfed diapers to having 12 completely liquid stools in one day. I called the Dr the next day and they said it was most likely a virus, just wait it out. Instead of waking up once at night to eat she started waking up 5-6 times just crying! After about two weeks it decreased to just one loose stool a day - but then we started seeing blood and mucus (not from a rash). The Dr had us send in some stool samples to the lab and everything checked out ok. The said since she wasn't having a fever or refusing to eat they weren't worried. Then came the fever! They had me try Alimentum and Nutramigen - but she wasn't taking bottles with breastmilk in them before that and we couldn't get her to take a bottle with formula. They put me on the elimination diet (no dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, or nuts) to see if that would help (i've been on it for almost two months now). We didn't see any more blood but still had the loose stools. Then she had an ear infection and they gave her amoxicillin - and now the stools have gotten seedy again - but now she's having 4 poopy diapers a day instead of one liquid one. She also went from gaining about 1/2lb a week to only 2-3 oz ever since she got sick. She's only gained a pound in half in the past 2 months. I know their weight gain usually does slow down around 6 months, but it seemed to happen much earlier than that. My Dr still seems convinced that it must be an allergy but i'm not so sure. Why would it have just showed up at 4 months like that? Why would her weight gain slow down so much if it was an allergy (and - considering i've eliminated most allergens why wouldn't it have gotten better already)? She only wakes up twice at night now (thank goodness), but we're just worried the doc's aren't taking us seriously. Has anyone else had this problem and what ended up happening?
