Hello,

I have a 6 1/2 month old and we just started giving him a sippy cup. He isn't really getting anything out of it so we thought about giving him water in a bottle. is it bad to give a baby water in a bottle. Does this cause any kind of confusion? I would really appreciate any input. Thanks

I don't think it's a problem as much as a mental thing. The idea behind it was to associate the bottle with forumula, and the cup with "big kid" drinks....it's supposed to help wean them from the bottle easier. At least that's the idea I got from the pediatrician. It worked pretty well with both of my kids. I didn't give them anything but forumula in the bottle, and they both gave up the bottle easily at a year old. I'm not really sure it was because of that reason, but it worked lol. I always say go with your parental instinct, using the Dr's advice only as a guide (except when it comes to medical issues of course!). I know it's not much help, but I think every kid is different so following a "standard" isn't right for every situation.... :)

My pediatrician told me not to give water in a bottle, to only equate the bottle with formula (or breast milk, whichever you use regularly). I see the theory behind that, however, if you're ready to introduce water to him I think it would be fine in the bottle. Or try a different type of sippy cup? Soft nipple or one that isn't spill resistant so it's easier to drink from. Just watch he doesn't dump it all over himself :)
