My son was born at 28 weeks this summer. He's doing well except for breastfeeding. He's just over 40 weeks now and I'm wondering if he will ever get it. Has anyone been through this? Shouldn't he be catching on since he's 'term' now? Help?!

Both my boys were prem babies. Dylan weighed 1.46kg's at birth and Ryan 810g! It was tough, Dylan didn't latch on and was tube fed for the first 5 weeks. Ryan was tube fed for 3 months!! What i did though was extract my breast milk and freeze it in packets. The breast feeding didn't work for us but i did manage to extract and bottle feed them my breast milk till they were 5 months old :-) Its a hectic alternative :-)

Even a baby born at full term can have trouble breast feeding, so just because he is 40 weeks does not mean he should be doing it right. You my want to call the lactation consultant again since you are still having problems, they would be the ones to be able to give you the best help.

Make sure you are relaxed when you go to feed him, if you are stressed and agitated he will pick up on your emotions and it will be harder on both of you.

@Katherine Collins. I've seen a lactation consultant just before discharge from hospital. I'm afraid my little one will end up liking the bottle too muc I've been pumping for almost three months now. The 'rules' certainly seem different when baby's premature. Is there anyone with a similar experience? How long did it take?

Have you consulted a lactation adviser? You may want to try that. They can be very helpful. Keep trying! My daughter wouldn't latch so I pumped. My second would but I had to get on meds that secreted into breast milk :(
