For some reason with this pregancy I have carved cigarretts. Well I am 38 weeks, and I just started smoking regulary for a couple weeks. Two days ago I woke up with a sore throat and coughing. Well last night I tired sleeping and when I lied down it felt like something was sitting on my chest, and I couldn't breath. It sometimes got better when I sat up, but I couldn't even prop myself up for relieve. So I didn't know if it was just the baby, or if I am getting a cold, or if it's the smoking. The ciggarrett I smoke is menthol ultra lights so they aren't strong...please help me before tonight so I can get some better sleep....Thanks

are you taking iron pills? I was craving dirt and ashes throughout my first pregnancy and was so severely exhausted. When they finally did my blood test, I was very anemic (surprise surprise, right?) Taking iron pills really helped, and I continued taking them after giving birth. Then, when I got pregnant again, I started taking them right away (with my doc's okay) and eating a lot of iron rich foods. I feel better, even though it's still there. They're pretty cheap (you can get store brand, or slow fe)

lol Honestly, I'm in no position to judge someone for smoking during pregnancy. If you've got low iron it might help the cravings if you eat a few more iron rich foods for the rest of your pregnancy.

I know while pregnant they sat a lot on my lungs so I had a hard time breathing especially as the pregnancy got closer to the end. I would still bring it up with your doctor though because it could be something much more severe and I would rather you be safe than sorry.

You need to see a doctor for a few reasons- one, that craving can be indicative of a more serious problem, and a doctor can help. Two, you need to get a handle on this- smoking IS the reason for your breathing problem and to START smoking while pregnant is a very dangerous choice for your child. Three, the doctor may want to put you on oxygen since you have been depriving you and your unborn child. Even one cig a day can cause serious health problems to your baby. They NEED the oxygen you are depriving them of. Please go to your doctor.

I had trouble breathing lying down during late term pregnancy also, but did quit in my second trimester. The soar throat is most likely from the smoking, and the breathing is probably a combination of the two.

Menthol are the worst you can smoke, regardless of the ultra light. I would think quitting right now would be your best bet, but it could be the baby giving you less room when you are lying down.

Joanna, thanks so much! I didn't smoke at all yesterday and I did feel a differance I still had a sore throat but when I went to bed I didn't feel like I was going to sufficate. Yes I know I shouldn't have started smoking for alot of reasons. But when I was younger as young as 2 and 3 my mom had said I liked licking ash trays. She took me too the doctor and he said it had something to do with my iron. Well then with my first born (3) years ago, I started craving ashes again. Then it stopped as soon as I had her. But it never came where I wanted to actually smoke. With this baby I started out craving ashes, then my boyfriend smokes so I started to like the cigarrette smoke, then now I started smoking. Yeah its bad I know....and I should have known that my breathing problems came from the smoking, but I wasn't sure...but thank you so much for not judging and giving me good advice.

"I woke up with a sore throat and coughing" That's most likely from the smoking. "when I lied down it felt like something was sitting on my chest, and I couldn't breath" That's most likely from smoking too, though baby's position is probably a contributing factor. The smoking can amplify the feeling though. Sore throat and trouble breathing are common irritations for people who start smoking. Even for me, I still get an irritated throat from smoking even though I'm used to it. If you're craving cigs this late in your pregnancy, it's a good idea to discuss it with a doctor. That being said, there are women who crave glue while they're pregnant... not every craving should be indulged.

Bottom line, if you want to breathe, get rid of the cigarettes. It'll take a few days before your lungs start to clear, but after just one day, you will notice a difference.

I agree with Kaitlin. Please go see your doctor. The fact that you are craving cigarettes during pregnancy is alarming, and it is NOT a craving in which you should be indulging. "Ultra light" cigarettes have just as many toxins as regular cigarettes -- they simply taste lighter. You are depriving yourself and your baby of oxygen. This is not meant as a judgment, but frankly, if you're looking for someone to reassure you that smoking during pregnancy is okay, then you're really not going to find that...not from any sensible person, anyway.

Why would this be a joke? And I am not the other person in the world who has smoked when pregant. And its not like I have been smoking the whole 9 months, and maybe if you read the whole post you would know its only been about a week, and its not like
I smoke a pack a day neither. And just because I smoke sometimes doesn't mean thats the reason why I had problems breathing at night. I am pretty sure you both have done something wrong in your lives so grow up and stop judging.

Why the hell would you START smoking while pregnant?! Seriously?! I sure hope this is a joke.

If it's not a joke... throw away all your cigarettes and do not smoke again. Surprise, surprise, smoking can screw up your ability to breathe... and it can harm your baby.

is this a joke?
Stop smoking! This is so bad for you and for your baby!
Craving cigarretts can be indicative of a real problem- talk to your doctor. And seriously, STOP SMOKING.
