My son has the most brittle toe nails I've ever seen. They're cracked and chipped. I feel so bad, I can't cut them because they're too short to get any nail. I try to keep socks on him so he doesn't catch the nails on anything. Anyone in the same situation?

All my children have brittle toenails too.  I have to keep them trimmed very short, and still they crack below the quick.  I've thought about rubbing them with coconut oil to hydrate them, but I keep forgetting.

Well.... :)  If you're willing to try anything, I'd say give the coconut oil a shot.  I used to have terribly brittle finger nails until I quit wheat and dairy.  Turns out I was allergic.  Now I'm on the Blood Type Diet and have perfect nails and hair and all.  Helped me to NOT have dairy.  *shrug*

He drinks lots of milk... I haven't talked to his doctor, but it probably wouldn't hurt.  Is coconut oil the best thing for that?  I'll try just about anything right now.  Just don't want him to get ingrown nails.

Both my boys were like this from day one, i asked the doctor about it and he told me to just keep them trimmed as straight as i could...so every sunday after bath we sit down and look to see if they need to be cut! my four years olds are now good! my two year olds are still like this and i am hoping that they get better too!! my fathers toe nails have always been bad also and up until a few years ago had to get my mom to cut his nails after soaking them....now he goes to a beauty salon to get his toe nails cut and he has not complained about an ingrown toe nail, a nail breaking or anything!! I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with training your nails to grow a certain way!!

My son has strong nails, but they keep chipping and cracking because he is so busy. He never walks anywhere - always runs - and he stubbs his toes all the time. Keeping shoes on him is not an option and sometimes when he sees me taking my socks off after a long day of standing on my feet (in steel toes on cement) he'll take off his socks, too. But even with the socks and shoes he seems to bend his nails backward (his big toes especially). Now that he is two, his fingernails are getting better and I'm hoping his toenails will follow suit eventually. But for now, it doesn't seem to bother him much so I let it pass.
