I am not a parent. I am a student at a public high school. My best friend has been a victim of bullying since preschool. For the past several months, her steel drums classmates have verbally picked on her and even resorted to throwing debris at her as she plays her instruments. Her teacher does not do anything about it and even calls her out in front of the class and points out her mistakes, purposely making her vulnerable to more abuse. My friend has been playing in this band for her whole high school life and has contributed to the band 100% and has played everything she's been asked. She's very innocent and obedient and physically small and this probably makes her a prime target. Her family has gone to the dean with the teacher but her teacher defends and invalidates the actions of the bullies. The guidance counselor has also been involved but defends the teacher. The school won't take action due to this testimony and the steel band room lacks a camera to use for evidence. My friend is the very passive and nonviolent but suffers from depression due to her many experiences with bullying including sexual harassment. As a friend and not a family member my input is ignored by the school. It is obvious the bullying is taking a toll on my friends emotions and I'm worried that one day either the students or teacher will go too far. I care about my wonderful friend so much and I just want her to be able to go to school without worrying about what her classmates will do to her. I don't know what to do as a student if the school staff will not aid their bullied student body.
