Bump on the Head

My four year old son was jumping in the bed and fell off and bumped his head. He screamed and cried for like 20 minutes when it happened and after he stopped crying he continued to play. He has a pretty big bump on his head now and when I touch it ever so lightly he winces and he says it hurts to lay on the side with the bump. I'm not sure what to do ? Should I take him to the emergency room ?

IMO as a mother of four and a nurse, he probably doesn't need treatment. If he is alert and oriented, and only has pain at the site of the injury, you can give him some Tylenol for pain and a ice pack if he can tolerate it. Now, if he is lethargic, and you can't wake him, becomes confused, begins vomiting, complains of blurred vision or you notice his eyes don't seem focused, or if his speech is slurred, then go to the ER.
You may want to contact his pediatrician on Monday.
