Caffeine and breastfeeding; effects on 3 mo old baby

Sara - posted on 06/06/2012 ( 2 moms have responded )

Just started back to work and am really tired in the morning. I am not a coffee drinker but sometimes need the pick me up (or want). I would only consume 1 cup of coffee or tea. How much is excreted in the breast milk and how does the caffeine affect the baby? I start to feel selfish but I no longer can sleep when hs sleeps and I must be awake all day. Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

The only time I noticed caffeine having any effect on my kids was when they were newborns. At 3 months old you shouldn't have a problem.

I think you are beyond okay! Some babies don't have ANY reaction to breastmilk after drinking coffee, but some do (like anything you eat). If you are concerned, make sure that the milk you pump after you drink your coffee is given to baby earlier in the day (so if it has any effect, you can notice it right away, and she won't stay up at night).
Remember you need to take care of yourself so you can take care of your child. If you are passing out at your computer, you can't work to make the dough to care for her.
