Calling out for somebody we do not know.

This is a very weird question, but has any of you ever experienced your child calling for somebody that none of the family or friends or even teachers know? I thought it quite cute that my son was calling out for "daddy". He is 2 yrs and 10 mnths old . But the problem is it is not his Dad that he wants, not Grandfathers and not me either. He does not have a toy or friend that even resembles the name. I have asked at school and nobody knows who "daddy" is. And it is not his Dummy either as he still sucks it every now and again and still has that with him at night. It has been going on for more than 2 weeks now, everytime he gets upset about something, he calls for "Daddy". My husband goes and no, not him, not me.Nothing traumatic has happened and he otherwise ok. HELP!! Anybody have any idea what I can do? My little boy is getting so upset everytime and cries himself to sleep about this.

Does he point to things? When he is calm, ask him to show you "daddy". If you are sure nothing is really wrong, don't make too much fuss. His language skills will improve a lot in the near future.
My son did something similar; he would shout out "shash-eye" (phonetically that is what it sounded like) he cry and call shash-eye over and over. It took months before we realized he was asking for my sister! His godmother, whom he adored and she adored him as well. He was actually saying flashlight! She had given him a flashlight and somehow he linked the word with her. It was bizarre and confusing but it did make sense eventually.

Next time ask if he can show you who/what 'daddy' is. See what he points's amazing what kids can come up with sometimes.

He is only almost 3. It is probably just an easy go to word for him. He may not be able to express himself enough to tell you "who" or even "what". It is just the word he is using to try.
