Can a 10 year old babysit

Even the most mature 10 year old does not have the ability to handle an emergency situation. My ten year old, is a mother's helper and gets paid a few dollars an hour to watch a two year old while the mother naps or does housework. When something goes wrong the mother is there. At ten, our local police force states it is safe for a child to be a "latch key kid", meaning a 10yo could come home from school and self monitor. We do not have a law regarding babysitters but the recommended age is 12. Out local community center offers a babysitting class, and the youngest age allowed to attend is 12. I think it depends on the age and how many kids the child is expected to supervise.

My daughter at 10 kept an eye on her brother (4) for 20 minutes or so one time in an emergency. While she is very mature and responsible... there is no way I would have her take on the babysitting responsibility at that age. Depending on your laws and the child.. 12+ is ok, but not under 12...

Legally, it probably depends where you live. In many places it would be against the law.
But realistically, 10 years old is not old enough to put in charge of another child. I wouldn't even contemplate allowing my 10 year old to babysit and be responsible for someone else. I don't even leave my 10 year old at home on her own for longer than about 5 minutes, let alone at home alome in charge of others.
