I have a 2 month old daughter and my doctor said breastfeeding can be used as birth control. If this is true, why do some people say that you are extremely fertile following birth? Thanks for your help in advance :)

Ya it was quite confusing because she gave me a pamphlet and everything on how to use BF as BC. Hear so many mixed messages about it, thank you

Your doctor is WAY offbase, and if that's the advice you're being given, I would certainly hope that you are seeking medical attention elsewhere!

You can get pregnant while breastfeeding. It is NOT birth control, nor has it ever been.

Yes, you CAN get pregnant any time you have sex. Whether or not you DO get pregnant depends on a variety of factors... none of which can be completely relied upon. Your doctor was quite ignorant to lead you to believe that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding. While for SOME women it can be 'fairly' reliable for a few months.... for others.. it ends up with 2 babies being born about a year apart from each other.

You 'typically' ovulate before your first after birth period and even though I was co-sleeping and feeding my son at least 12 times in 24 hours.... my first period came back when he was 2.5 months old... and has been coming every month since. Some women do not ovulate while breastfeeding, so you 'could' end up being one of those... but you won't know until your period starts... or you end up pregnant while breastfeeding a newborn.
